My Story
Humpback whales feed on tiny shrimp-like creatures: Antarctic krill. Krill is dependent on sea ice for food and shelter. The predicted decrease in sea ice as a result of climate change may impact 80% of the Antarctic krill population. If krill decreases that much, what will happen to the whales? Currently, we also fish krill, to feed it to farmed fish. For instance, Australia fishes about 2.65 million tonnes of Antarctic krill per year. Now that we know that krill will be heavily impacted by climate change, can we reduce or abandon krill fishing...?
